When I was a kid, my mind would wander in imagination.
I loved riding my bike down the street imagining that I was flying an airplane. I loved building forts out of branches and whatever else I could find and pretending that I was lost in the middle of the forest, surviving only with what I had in my backpack. I always made it home just in time.
Growing old has a certain way of sifting out the things that seemingly don’t matter. The worries of our youth, the chances of becoming the next big athlete or celebrity. All of these things come into focus for what they are and we are met with the sometimes tragic reality of their unlikely place in our story. But sometimes when the hope for stardom sifts out, so also goes our curiosity.
The heart of God for you includes a plan that is greater than you can ever imagine. It’s a plan to give you a hope and a future. And it’s a plan that began before you became an adult!
“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…” Philippians 1:6
I love this verse. It reminds us that God began something in you and me before today. It’s a plan that includes our part in the greater story that God is writing across all history and time. The truth about God’s story for you and me is that the part you play mattered before you realized it and will still matter after you feel like your contribution is over.
Your life is about more than the next promotion. It’s about more than going on a better vacation this year than last year, or an early retirement or meeting whatever benchmarks you have before you. God may be unveiling something greater in you than you have in your own playbook.
May we be curious about the words God is still writing in our chapter. May we recognize that God has already used us for His glory and that with our lives committed to serving Him, He will continue to do more than we could ever imagine.
