My mom knew who I would be before I ever was. She said she knew her first child would be a little girl named Harmony and she would sing. I am her first child and I love to sing. Song and the name Harmony have carried me into other names. These names call me to a different purpose in different peoples’ lives. Each one unique and gifted for a time or sometimes a lifetime: Daughter, Sister, Mama, Teacher, Wife, Friend, Director, Prayer Warrior, Peacemaker.

Jesus has different names too. We call to Him depending on how we need Him in our lives: Emmanuel, Savior, Son of God, Healer, Redeemer, Teacher, Lord, Friend, The Word, The Beginning, and the End.

In all of these names, He chose to bring glory to His Father. Jesus mirrored honor for God’s reputation. His name was chosen before He was born.

“You are to give him the name Jesus because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

We believe there is power in the name of Jesus.

“My Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.” John 16:23

What are the names you carry? Are they a calling to your life? Are they hard to carry sometimes? Are they an honor to bear?

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
1 Corinthians 10:31

My daughter recently asked me, “Mama, why do I have to go to school and why do you go to work?”

I suppose the world would tell her, “So you can get a job to make money to pay the bills.”

As a follower of Jesus I hope our titles and our work are to point to Him. “You go to school and I go to work because God has a very important purpose for us. That is to bring glory to Him right where we are. There is only one you, and God made you special with a special purpose only you can fulfill. You get to figure out what that looks like, baby girl. You get to choose what you will be called.”

Some names are chosen for us before we are born, like a destiny we must become. Others we choose along the way for a season to learn and to grow. A few of our names have the power to last a lifetime or more. But in these names, we are all a “child of God” first. May we choose wisely to make Him smile and know Him deeply as we bring glory and honor to His Name.
