Why do you go to that restaurant or grocery store? Why do you have the same dentist or physician as long as you can remember?
Loyalty can be a result of convenience or routine, but I believe loyalty is most affected with a personal touch. We are people that are drawn to places that provide sincere value to our lives.
Most recently, my attention was drawn to a taxi company that went global in the early 2000’s. Scott McKain, entrepreneur and motivational speaker for customer service, spoke of his first encounter with Taxi Terry.
“At the airport in Jacksonville, I awaited for my taxi. When my taxi pulled up, the driver quickly jumped out of his car and said, “Are you ready for the best cab ride of your life?” He then sprinted and placed my luggage in his cab. He opened the door and let me inside the vehicle. Before I even told him, he called me by name and asked me where I was going. He then used his navigation on his dashboard to display the weather for the next few days. At the end of the ride, he gave me access electronically to my receipt and customer survey. He also sprinted to the rear of the cab and picked up and held my luggage like a newborn baby being passed to the doorman of the hotel.”
The next day McKain reflected on this encounter with Taxi Terry, “If you can get this experience and appreciation from a taxi cab driver, why shouldn’t my business provide service like this?”
I will stretch this even further and ask the question, “Why shouldn’t my career, church and involvement in the community provide service like this?”
Everyone has a ministry. Whether you are a business owner, healthcare professional, educator, student or parent, you have a ministry. Simply, a ministry is an avenue where you can make someone the star of the show.
In the Gospel of Matthew, we get a perfect glimpse of Jesus, full of love and compassion. As Jesus returned from the Sermon on the Mount, he rapidly gained a large following. Among the crowd, Jesus navigated his attention to a man knelt before him, suffering from leprosy. Jesus not only spoke healing upon the man but placed his hands upon him which was seen as unclean during this time.
God challenged us in the very first chapter of the Bible to love and serve like He does. God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them (Genesis 1:27). God called us to be imitators of Christ. This calling gives us the privilege to treat his children the way he treated them.
No matter our circumstance or someone’s situation, we must value everyone we come in contact with. Warren Buffett once said, “It takes twenty years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” These words are so true in relating with those around us.
Will you go the extra mile today and make someone the star of the show?
