I have been obsessed with music and song lyrics for most of my life. As a young girl, I used my allowance to buy magazines with song lyrics in them from our local Home Folks record store. There are not many late ’70s and ’80s songs that I cannot sing along with. And there is always a song playing in my head whether I want it there or not.

As I began a closer relationship with God in my adult years, I found myself listening to Christian music more often. The lyrics began to pierce my soul as they taught me more about God’s love and will for my life.

I recently had surgery (non life-threatening) and was anxious and fearful even as I was being prepped for surgery. After the hospital staff completed their prep, I was able to focus on the song in my head which was “Yes I Will” by Vertical Worship.

“I count on one thing
The same God that never fails
Will not fail me now
You won’t fail me now
In the waiting
The same God who’s never late
Is working all things out
Is working all things out”

Let me tell you, God was speaking so clearly to me through those lyrics and brought me so much peace that I still get emotional thinking about it. He knows what I need to hear and how I need to hear it.

God speaks to those who believe in Him. He communicates with us in many ways:

God speaks to us through scripture. We know the will of God when we know the Word of God.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” 2 Timothy 3:16.

God speaks to us through prayer. It is a two-way conversation. We need to focus on listening to Him as much as talking to Him.

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27

God speaks to us through the Holy Spirit that lives inside of us. We are reminded of what God says in His Word which helps us make the right decisions.

“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” John 14:26

God puts other people in our path to speak Truth to us. When someone gives us advice that aligns with God’s Word, we had better listen.

“The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom and their tongues speak what is just.” Psalm 37:30

Thank you God for knowing us so intimately and communicating with us on a personal level right where we are. May we always listen to your voice and respond in a way that is pleasing to you. Amen.
