Did you know that Georgia and South Carolina have some of the highest reports of domestic violence in the country? On a regular basis, we see reports of domestic violence that end tragically. Studies indicate that 1 in 4 American women and their children will experience domestic violence at least once in her lifetime. This can be displayed in many forms such as physical violence, threats, sexual abuse, as well as emotional and mental abuse. On Mother’s Day, May 14, TrueNorth Church will partner with Safe Homes of Augusta in an effort to assist victims of domestic violence.

Safe Homes is a non-profit organization in our community which offers assistance to victims of domestic violence. This organization provides protection, emergency shelter, counseling and basic needs for the victims and families who seek help. Because of the growing need for emergency housing, Safe Homes built a new shelter in 2016 which can assist twice as many victims. The organization does receive some financial assistance from grants, but most of their assistance comes from organizations and individuals to help sustain their program.

This Mother’s Day, TrueNorth is wanting to make an impact in our community by providing some of the basic needs for the victims as they leave the Safe Homes program and get on their feet again. We are asking each person at TrueNorth to donate one or more non-perishable food items or grocery store gift cards and bring them to TrueNorth during all three services on Mother’s Day, May 14 (9:30am, 11:30am or 5:00pm).
