From the time we are a little child, we are taught how to be competent in every area of our life. We learn and try to be the best we can be. We try to focus on succeeding. And this is wonderful! But oh boy, does this get exhausting sometimes. It’s so easy to become overwhelmed at trying to be “great” at everything. This is an honorable thing to bring your best, and you should, but the Bible would tell you that you are unable to carry this out on your own. It tells us that only through a relationship with Christ can we be competent in life and please our Father in Heaven.

“Such confidence we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.”  2 Corinthians 3:4-5

Whew. I don’t know about you but that makes me feel a lot better. It has always been wired in me to try and be so many different things for so many different people. And many times my mind becomes chaotic and I feel so much pressure. This is because when I only pull from my own strength, I get worn down and become like a robot. I lose my child-like joy in everyday life and stress begins to rule me.

When we have a relationship with Jesus, we are given the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is always with us, but we don’t always live aware of the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:6 tells us that “the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.” I know I WANT that every single day of my life. I know that this requires me to surrender my mind over to God every single day. And this is hard.

We should always strive to bring our best to other people and most importantly to God, but we will not always succeed. We will fail. And that’s why God gives us grace and the Holy Spirit. So sit back, take a deep breath and know that it is okay that you are incompetent some days. Jesus knows that and will make you confident in the competence He offers. Praise God for this freedom that enables us to love others well and to walk in joy!
