In his latest book, The Last Arrow, author Erwin McManus writes, “When God has your heart, you can trust your desires. His will is not a map. It is a match. He shows you the way by setting you on fire. You will know God’s desire for you by the fire in you! The fire in you will light the way.”

The Psalmist wrote,

“Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4).

I believe both of these statements. Like McManus, I believe God’s will for your life is not a map but a match. He sets us on fire to live the kind of life we were born to live. We often wish that God would lay out his clear and specific directions for us like the maps app on my phone. Instead, God puts a fire in our hearts that spreads in sometimes unpredictable ways. When I reflect on my past, I know the fire that God placed in my heart. I know how I planned it out in my mind but my plans were nothing compared to God’s plans!

How do you get that fire in your heart? How do you know the desires of your heart? According to the Psalmist, you must delight yourself in the Lord. How do you delight in the Lord? That could be a long answer. But let me give you three things in which you can delight.

First, you can delight in God’s grace. The song Amazing Grace is not necessarily famous because of the tune. It’s famous because of the lyrics. Space doesn’t allow me to include the lyrics in this article but I would encourage you to find the lyrics and read over them – slowly. When you reflect on God’s grace supplied to us through Christ, it truly is amazing.

You can also delight in God’s mercy. Grace is an undeserved gift. Mercy is not receiving what we deserve. Remember when you were a kid and you did something that deserved punishment? But, for some reason, your parents decided not to discipline you? That’s mercy. God’s Word tells us we deserve death but through Christ we have the promise of abundant and eternal life.

I would also encourage you to delight in God’s love. God doesn’t just love you. He’s crazy about you. He loves you more than you can imagine. He created you to be His forever friend. He displayed His love for you when He wiped away your sin problem on the cross.

Grace. Mercy. Love. Meditate on these three things. Consider what God has provided for you. Accept His grace, mercy, and love into your heart and it will be a delight. Then, when you are delighting in Him, He will put a fire in your heart.
