It’s a new year!  Are you excited for a new chance to be (fill in the blank); happier, thinner, healthier, a more intentional spouse, a more patient parent?  Years ago, I quit making New Year resolutions. Mainly because I never followed through after the first few weeks and was tired of feeling like a failure. Do you have that experience?  You have new resolve to go to the gym four days a week and it’s packed because you and every other person there have the same plan. How many of those people do you think follow through on that resolution?  You’d see (if you made it past February!) that numbers go back to normal in a month or two.

First, the Lord has taught me over the years that I was made new the moment I accepted Jesus in June of 2006 (2 Corinthians 5:17). I was new then and I am new now!  I don’t need to make a new resolution every year.  The only resolution that I need in my life is to love God with all my heart, soul, strength and mind and to love my neighbor as myself (Luke 10:27).

Second, thanks to God’s grace, he reveals areas of our lives that have room for improvement throughout the year in small doses. (I don’t think we could handle it if he did it all at once!)  We have a chance every time he prompts our spirit to make a resolution to follow his leading. These resolutions will have the biggest impact in your life above any other.

Third, Paul says in Philippians 1:6, “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” You don’t have to feel like a failure because God will complete the work that he began in you. You can do this because he pours out his Spirit on his followers and that makes all resolutions that honor God possible!
