One of my favorite chapters in the bible is Psalm 91. If you haven’t read it lately or even read through it before, I encourage you to jump right in and taste the goodness of God. You will find yourself craving His word in Psalm 91 over and over again in your life, like a great meal with even better dessert. Why? Well, let’s examine how this verse fits into our lives like a snuggly warm coat, a comfy bed on a lazy weekend afternoon, or like a big powerful truck in fierce weather conditions on a busy road.
Summer is approaching fast and storms are ever present. They are easy reminders of the need for shelter and rescue. Got a dog or young kids in your house? Storms are not pushovers, especially late at night. Our dachshund is not fond of them and will let you know all night long. Kids love to run down the hall to the parent’s bed in a flash. All it takes is one small thunderstorm cell to turn a peaceful night into an all-night, no sleep, no serotonin building, adrenaline pumping, and wide-open eyelid experience.
In our lives, we are the dachshund. Small and needy in whatever storm of life we may find ourselves. Don’t see yourself that way? Just wait, wisdom and experience will show you this over time. If we were smart, we would act like little kids and run into the arms of our heavenly Father and sit in His lap through prayer. We would also listen to his calming voice by reading His word. Then we would experience Him rescuing us, covering us with wings like a bird, and feeling the power of His presence and strength running through our lives.
Here are some excerpts of Psalm 91 from the New Living Translation. In verse 2, the word of God says,
“This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.”
Notice that it begins with a declaration you must make about the Lord. A declaration is a formal announcement of the beginning of a state or condition you are entering. This is strong! God must be your ultimate refuge, your place where safety starts and stops. This declaration of complete trust in God through Jesus Christ is where everything about the state of your present and future position in God begins and ends.
From Psalm 91:11-13 (NLT), the word of God says,
“For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet.”
I don’t know about you, but these verses fire me up! God’s fierce warrior angels are summoned to protect us everywhere we go. Whenever we feel weak, they are also there to uphold us. Think about how different you might perceive and experience life if you were more aware of this ever present reality. These angels are not little babies with wings, but are mighty warriors that would freak us out at their fierce nature and looks, hence the “do not be afraid” statements angels make throughout the bible when they appear to mankind. With God, we have unlimited power to crush the most fierce lions and cobras in our lives, whatever they may be. FYI, it is snake season. Don’t take this literally please.
Finally, in verses 14-16, the scripture tells us that the Lord will rescue those who love Him and protect those who trust in His name. Whenever we call upon Him, He will answer. He promises us that He will be with us in our troubles, rescue and honor us, and reward us with a long life and give us salvation.
These verses and this entire chapter flood my soul with eternal hope and encouragement. The battle truly belongs to the Lord. In this world, our physical bodies will give out on us at some point. However, the truth is that once we belong to God by placing our hope and trust in Christ’s death on the cross and resurrection from the dead, nothing, and I mean nothing, can touch our souls. In fact, we, the real us, will never die.
Shelter, Rescue, and Power belong to those who belong to God in Christ Jesus. Psalm 91 is a great place to go to hear the word of God and find answers to your current crisis, power for today, and hope for tomorrow. Feast upon Psalm 91 and then let His promises sink into the depths of your belly and soul. Trust in Him and His promises. Then and only then will you find what you are truly looking for in this life and in the one to come which has no end.
